OpenStreetMap To Give Google Maps A Run For Its Money By Launching Its New ‘iD’ Editor

2792355658_c8e1ce8ec2_z

Google has become the king of maps because of the technology that it has developed over the past eight years. One competitor, OpenStreetMap, has developed its own tools and built a community of map enthusiasts that now powers services like Hipmunk, Evernote and Foursquare. Today, as promised, the company has released a brand new map editor, code-named “iD,” which was built from the ground up by MapBox.

The editor will allow its community, and those who have never edited a map before, to plot out roads, landmarks and everything in between. I’ve had a chance to play with the editor over the past few weeks, and it’s amazing. Google has its own community tool, dubbed Map Maker, which helps the company get into the nooks and crannies of the world that it hasn’t gotten to yet.

Now that OpenStreetMap has its own set of tools which makes map editing easy, I expect the service to ramp up the quality of its maps, making it a real alternative for apps and services looking for a service provider. Here’s what OpenStreetMap US Foundation Secretary, Alex Barth, had to say about the release of the editor:

Starting today 1 million community mappers gain access to this new editor. It radically flattens the learning curve for existing users and for the two thousand new ones OpenStreetMap adds every day. Investing in core infrastructure like this is a game changer for OpenStreetMap and legacy proprietary data companies won’t be able to keep up with the combination of top notch editing experience and openly licensed database. In short, we will get more people adding more data, faster.

Adding and changing roads in an existing map is as simple as dragging and dropping, using iD:

The editor itself is open source and built in pure JavaScript with the d3 visualization library. As MapBox has been building the tool, its had involvement from coders around the world already:

The editing tool below, which has been what OpenStreetMap has had for its community to use, was not so easy to get the hang of:

MapBox CEO, Eric Gundersen, thinks that that the iD editor will kickstart the community, which will lead to more content: “This editor is so easy to use, anyone can start mapping in minutes. This is going to increase both data quality and quantity in OpenStreetMap and that means MapBox is going to have the best map in the world.”

The “best map in the world” would mean that it surpasses both the quality and breadth of Google’s offering. That’s no small feat, but we’ve seen open source products in the past reach millions…just ask WordPress.

Benchmark’s Bill Gurley Says New York Has The Engineers And Entrepreneurs, Now It Needs Big Iconic Companies

gurley

What are the challenges that the New York tech scene needs to address? This topic kicked off the conversation this morning between TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington and venture capitalist Bill Gurley at TechCrunch Disrupt NY 2013. Gurley’s VC firm, Benchmark, has invested in some of the most disruptive technology companies over the past 10 years, including Dropbox, Zillow, Uber, Twitter and Snapchat. He says that New York needs more iconic companies, and worries about the Wall Street influence on the New York tech community.

Gurley noted that what really put Seattle on the map were companies he described as “four pillars” of the Seattle market  - companies that people identify as being associated with Seattle: specifically, Microsoft, Starbucks, Amazon, and Costco. He says that all of these were originally venture-backed and have remained  throughout the years.

New York has the entrepreneurs and the engineers, says Gurley. Now the city needs its own “iconic” companies to put it on the map, as well. There’s no precedent for that here just yet, he adds. But when pressed on whether or not New York didn’t have “big” companies, Gurley admitted that VC’s think of DoubleClick as one of the big exits here, and more recently, he says, there was the exit of Connecticut-based job site Indeed.

“[Indeed] had a great business model, a huge consumer brand…and they sold it,” scoffed Gurley. “I think in general, in the venture business we have this problem – this kind of anti-IPO attitude – that I think prohibits companies from hitting the long ball, but it seems like maybe that’s even more acute here.”

Venture capitalists are dependent on huge home runs – big wins. He said the system dynamic in New York prevent companies from reaching that point. The mentality in New York is one that’s still associated with that found on Wall Street, Gurley said. That is, Wall Street is not loyal to companies, but is more focused on the dollars and bottom line. This can prevent companies from growing large, turning into the kind of iconic firms that could one day become pillars of the New York tech community, the way that Microsoft et al. have become synonymous with Seattle.

Earlier this morning, Andreessen Horowitz’s Chris Dixon spoke of other, but somewhat similar, concerns, when comparing the general climate for startups in New York to those in San Francisco. “There are plenty of great investors here and attracts lot of entrepreneurs,” he had. But he saw challenges in the “whole mid-level layer” when companies have a hit product and now need to scale.

“I hope it will all change,” Gurley concluded on this front, addressing the audience, but he honestly didn’t sound all that hopeful.

Following Kleiner Perkins Lawsuit, Former Partner Ellen Pao Joins Reddit To Build Strategic Partnerships

ellen pao

It’s been a while since we’ve heard news of Ellen Pao, the former Kleiner Perkins partner who’d sued her firm for alleged gender discrimination. After she disclosed that she’d been fired from her position (followed by a bit of a debate on what being “fired” meant), the story went quiet.

Today, we’re finding out her next steps: she’s joined team reddit.

Ellen has actually been involved at reddit for some time, having advised the Internet’s biggest little community both formally and informally over the past year. With the announcement today, Ellen will now officially be leading reddit’s Strategic Partnerships.

Here’s what Ellen had to say in an announcement released on the site:

I grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey, raised by enginerds on Star Wars, computers and books. I live in San Francisco, via New York City, Boston and Hong Kong. I’ve worked with dozens of tech companies, traveling to eleven countries on five continents, to help build a variety of consumer and business platform companies. My favorite subreddits are /r/IAmA and /r/pareidolia (I like people even when they’re not real). Being part of a community of people who care is inspiring and energizing. reddit has so much to offer so many people, and I’m excited to find partners to help make reddit even more awesome.

Ellen makes no mention of the lawsuit in today’s announcement, nor elsewhere that we’ve seen publicly in recent months — which, given that it’s ongoing, is probably the right move.

[Side note: TIL that /r/pareidolia exists. There goes my afternoon.]
