In the next episode of my Foundation series, I talk with Chad Hurley, co-founder of YouTube, and founder of AVOS (a Google Ventures portfolio company).
Chad talks about life after YouTube, hints at his latest ambition in the video collaboration space and recalls one very important breakfast meeting at Denny’s.
Chad’s thoughts on the future of social collaboration:
How do we help people create better content? I don’t think that part has been solved…I don’t think the creation side has really been cracked….I feel like there should be better ways for people to collaborate, because right now social memes are selfish. People share really for themselves. In the spectrum of social, it’s about your self image, it’s not collaborative. And what keeps people from sharing things is being concerned about how they’re going to be judged.
The new stuff I’m thinking about is how do you remove the identity from some of the things that have been going on today with social? And how do you combine people so it allows them to work together in more collaborative ways? It’s not about the individual, it’s about the content they create.
We’re working on some new concepts. I wish this conference took place maybe a month later….We’re working on some ideas about how people could collaboratively work together to create better content. I call it structured storytelling. That’s the stuff I’m thinking about.

In case you’re not vigorously refreshing our Disrupt NY events page like we are, TechCrunch Disrupt is coming up. We’re receiving a record number of Startup Battlefield applications and watching the last batch pour in before the deadline on Monday. We’ve also started to announce some amazing special guests and speakers. Tickets for this year’s show can be found here.
From pivot to iconic acquisition, there is perhaps no recent Valley success story more symbolic than that of Instagram and its cofounder Kevin Systrom. His saga, and the fact that he’s a sharp cookie, are why we’re delighted to have this Crunchies 2013 Founder Of The Year join us on the Disrupt NY stage.
Systrom will be headlining along with previously announced speakers Fred Wilson, Ken Lerer, Ben Lerer, Roelof Botha, Ron Conway, David Lee, and Kevin Ryan.
Stay tuned for more updates, and remember, if you want to apply for Startup Battlefield, do so before Monday, February 25th. More info on applying can be found here.

Co-founder, Instagram
Kevin Systrom is a co-founder of Instagram, a photo sharing application for the iPhone. He also founded Burbn, an HTML5-based location sharing service. Kevin graduated from Stanford University in 2006 with a BS in Management Science & Engineering—he got his first taste of the startup world when he was an intern at Odeo that later became Twitter.
He spent two years at Google—the first of which was working on Gmail, Google Reader, and other products and the latter where he worked on the Corporate Development team. Kevin has always had a passion for social products that enable people to communicate more easily, and combined with his passion for photography, Instagram is a natural fit.

The Gillmor Gang — Robert Scoble, Keith Teare, Kevin Marks, John Taschek, and Steve Gillmor — pondered the debatable relationship between Netflix’ House of Cards and the tech community. From HBO’s Jeff Bewkes calling the Kevin Spacey series “pretty good” to Comcast buying the rest of NBC/Universal from GE, the economics of streaming TV took a big leap forward.
Not so much email, which @scobleizer defended with filters, smart labels, and Sane Boxes. We heard about smart calendars and DM suckage and Apple spoilage, but no matter: it’s all about finding more time to devote to binge viewing and meteor dodging. More bacon please.
